Yo guys,
Last night I installed my Accessport and did a
Stage 1 91 octane v104 map on it.
It ran perfect until...
Today, I drove from Hesperia (4000ft elevation)
to Cerritos (30ft elevation)
Was on freeway, downshifted to 4th and gunned it
Under max throttle, It sputtered and threw a check engine light.
I diagnosed it and it said:
PO302
PFFFF
PFFFE
Called Cobb, told them I threw a check engine
They told me to reset the ECU and drive it and if it popped the same codes for the same cylinder, there may be something wrong with my plugs, intake manifold seals etc etc....
I reset the ecu, then drove back to Hesperia
(Thomas, I saw you on the freeway and sent you an email to call me, I was actually trying to call you right when the light popped but couldnt find your # so I called Cobb instead lol)
When back in Hesperia (gunned it on the freeway the same way i did when the check eng light got thrown, and nothing, worked fine.)  Is this normal?  Altitude related?  anyone else have this problem? or hear of anyone else having this problem?

Nothing ever goes smoothly, there always needs to be a problem......

Do you have the regular 91 Octane or the 91CA Octane map?  The code shows a misfire error, but since it's not repeatable, it doesn't seem major.  TYPICALLY if it's minor enough, the ECU retards or advances itself to compensate without thinking.

But I used to get funny CELs as soon as weather starts to warm up and gas at the pumps become questionable.  That's just me, but I drive so much I no longer have faith in quality gas.  I get CELs P0301, 302, 303, 304 quite about once every 1000 miles....this was when i had a good motor!

haha when i passed you i did the whole double take and told me brother "hey i know that guy!" haha i saw your ap mounted on your dash.

as for the cel, i wouldnt worry about it too much unless it happens again. like anson said it may not be a major problem.  your accessport can read the check engine codes for you and tell you exactly what they mean, thats whats really nice about the version you have.  i dont know if you can do it while driving tho. but like anson said, make sure you used the CA 91 oct map, they may have compensated for altitude changes some how.  i run up the mountains all the time from a low altitude to a high altitude with no problems.

but how do you like stage 1?

haha! I was like "who the fuck is this dick in this 4Runner riding my ass!?" If my girlfriends parents werent in the car, I was gonna mash on my brakes lol.  haha then, i saw you.

Yeah I just took the car out up here in Hesperia and drove the shit out of it.  I got up to around 140 and let off..
AP says boost got to 16.2psi no check engine light, everything was perfect.   I really think it may have been the altitude.
Maybe the computer needs to adjust?
But even before I got my AP
I notice that when I drive the car up here for a while, then go down the hill, it runs a bit strange.  You can hear the turbo spool more and the blow-off is louder.
BUT then when i drive down in Cerritos for a while, the car starts to feel normal and when i come back up to hesperia, it feels like it lost a lot of power, blowoff is quiet as hell.   But later after driving it, blowoff goes back to normal, but it takes about a day.

This kind if makes sense.  I know that with Diesel Engines (trucks) when you get the Banks Turbo Kit (basically like a stage 2 tune)  It says you need to drive the truck for about 3 days until the computer adjusts itself.  It will run like shit the 1st few days, then it will run good.

The AP I have can check engine codes while driving

So far, the stage 1 is a night and day difference.  Not so much in the power (although there is a difference in how hard it pulls) the thing i like about it most is the drivability....  No more jerky / pulsating throttle response.  The car is now acting like a car should act.  Its just lot more pleasant to drive

But let me know if my altitude theory makes any sense at all

Fpund a few things on my drive just now....

I looked at my AP Maps and I don't see a - CA 91 Octane map

Also I went down to Cerritos again tonight, just got back.

On the way back home I thought it would be a good opportunity to test elevation vs Boost and wanted to see if my car would still detonate and drop off in power in full throttle which it did..

I tried a few things and had my AP monitoring Boost in different locations
I found some shit, and I'm 99.99999% sure this is the problem, but I dont know how to fix it...

Keep in mind this is a 91 Octane Stage 1 map v104
My 07 STI is completely stock except for I have a K&N filter that replaced the paper one in my stock airbox

Anaheim Hills (elevation ??) Max Boost = 17.8 PSI (Detonated and had violent ON/OFF power fluctuations) (isnt this a bit high???)

Hesperia (3500-3800ft elevation) 16.2 PSI (runs perfect)

Oak Hills (4000ft elevation) 15.7 PSI (runs great too)

Im gonna call Cobb Tomorrow, if you guys have any input, please let me know
Thanks

Why's this kind of shit always happen to me??

I was RIGHT!
I just read the Cobb AP CD

Check it out:

Calibration Name: Stage1 91 v104

Boost Targets: ~16.5psi +/- 0.8psi peak boost pressure tapering down
to ~14psi, depending on vehicle and conditions. If your vehicle is
not achieving or exceeding the boost targets, you may need to
mechanically adjust your boost control system, please refer to this
document “How Subaru’s Factory Boost Control System Works v1.X” for instructions. Boost cut at sea level is increased to ~19psi.

Well....at least i know what the problem is...

You guys were right...  I just saw the CA map
Its the Stage1 91 ACN v104
I overlooked it cus I was looking for a Stage 1 CA v104 specifically...lol
I loaded it, I havent tested it, but i know it will fix this problem.
I also talked to cobb, they said if the problem still continues, they will send me a restrictor pill.

But I was still right about 1 thing.  Altitude does cause over-boosting issues...
which would need to be fixed mechanically (restrictor pill)

Now we know
Thanks guys lol
